Summer inspection of central heating system

Break in heating of residential buildings is a great time for periodic maintenance and cleaning of boilers fired with solid fuels. Usually, contaminants in form of soot, dust and ash accumulate inside the combustion chamber. These contaminants directly influence the efficiency of operation of the equipment. However, it is sufficient to execute simple operations on regular basis to improve boiler efficiency, avoid unexpected failure and significantly extend its lifetime. There are two types of maintenance depending on boiler type:

Charging boilers

– in this case it is a bit easier, you should:

  1. remove ash from the combustion chamber and ash-pan,
  2. clean soot from the combustion chamber using a wire brush,
  3. clean smoke tubes and flue gas ducts with a brush, then remove soot from flue gas ducts,
  4. the clean external casing of the boiler from depositing ash, soot, dust and residues of fuel,
  5. check the tightness of the water system and tightness of doors of the boiler, flue and chimney; tighten hinges or replace the gasket in the doors if necessary,
  6. if the individual components do not require replacement or additional sealing then it is necessary to protect internal walls of the body with special oil, to protect it against the condensation of steam, which can potentially lead to a failure.

Boilers with feeder

Design of the feeder boilers is more complicated. Therefore, cleaning of the whole structure is more complicated. Firstly you should:

  1. remove residues of fuel and empty charging hopper,
  2. remove soot from the combustion chamber and vertical smoke tubes using a wire brush,
  3. clean air chambers,
  4. seal furnace plates (once per year),
  5. check the tightness of doors,
  6. check the condition of the feeder,
  7. in case of screw-conveyor feeder you should proceed in accordance with enclosed manual, remove split pin, unscrew transmission and remove the screw to check its conditions; order new screw from the manufacturer if it is worn excessively,
  8. if the individual components do not require replacement or additional sealing, the internal walls of the boiler body should be protected with oil, intended for this purpose, to protect against condensation of steam, which can lead to the occurrence of a failure in consequence.

Periodical inspections should be performed once per year during standstill of the device. To execute inspection of the boiler and establish a scope of possible repairs the boiler should be precisely cleaned from the residues after combustion from the fire side.

System prepared in such way for sure will ensure failure-free heating season and will serve for many years.
